SAVE SECTION 230
CALL YOUR HOUSE REPS AND SAVE SECTION 230 AND STOP THE TAKE DOWN ACT
I know the past few months have been hard on all of us but a greater threat approaches. major gov leader dick durben wants to sunset section 230 and pass a bill called the TAKE DOWN act, both bills have the capacity to give the trump administration complete control the internet.
Sunset 230 is a protection from lawsuits made if you make a third party we sit that isn’t connected to major sites, while the first amendment protects your free speech section 230 would prevent lawsuits by gov figures. If section 230 is gone you would be silenced not by the lack of 1st amendment protections but by the extreme financial gutting you have to deal with those law suits.
By destroy section 230 it would result in less moderation and world wide censorship
The TAKE DOWN ACT will double down on this move as that bill removes end to end encryption so the government can just read your DM’s there is also no protection from false reports that can be used to remove sex Ed, LGBTQ+ content, and reproductive healthcare resources. This level of censorship results in trump silencing his critics as well as the rest of the world as well as just straight up 1984 type nonsense! The worst part is that it passed the senate ALREADY!
So after learning all that how can you stop it….

“A House panel advanced the Kids Online Safety Act bill, also known as KOSA, on Wednesday, pushing forward legislation intended to boost online privacy and safety for children.”
1) sign this petition and share it everywhere on social media @Twitter @Tiktok @Reddit https://www.youthagainstkosa.com/
2) call house leadership (see numbers here). This is a VERY important step. Again, use these call scripts: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IyBUe6frFGF44rJQU3TahZ5zyG3tC7jai_hPneAKlnM/edit
3) Call the House Energy and Commerce Committee Here
There is a very big possibility this passes. We HAVE to put pressure on leadership and these politicians and show them this is a poision bill that WILL HARM children.

Fight For the Future - KOSA Billboard
Spreed the word
We’ve got a message for Democratic lawmakers who co-sponsor censorship bills and collaborate with Trump’s fascist agenda: we won’t let you rest until you stop doing their dirty work. Today, a billboard truck is circling Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal’s office in downtown Hartford, calling him out for reintroducing censorship bill KOSA1 and betraying his queer and trans constituents— and we paid for it. It wasn’t in our budget, but someone had to draw a line in the sand this Pride Month, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Can you help cover the $1,925 it cost to demand Dems like Blumenthal stop helping Trump carry out his queerphobic censorship fantasies?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) would give Trump’s FTC full power to censor online free speech and block young people from accessing life-saving information and community online.2 It’s a censorship bill couched in “child safety” that proponents and enforcers like Senator Marsha Blackburn,3 Elon Musk,4 and FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson5 would proudly use to “fight back against the trans agenda” and any topic they don’t approve of. Abortion care access, political speech, and LGBTQ+ content are all on the line.
Blumenthal’s cooperation with this ghoulish bill, especially during Trump’s escalating crackdowns on marginalized communities, is unconscionable. We’ve tried everything: hundreds of thousands of young people have sent letters to Congress,2 hundreds more parents of trans kids penned a letter begging lawmakers not to pass this dangerous bill,6 we’ve written op-eds,7 met with offices, and still, Blumenthal is choosing the wrong side of history. So we took it to Blumenthal's doorstep and made him face the reality of his choices head-on.

Matthew Wallace / The Missing Lens
Will you rush a donation to get this billboard covered and help us gear up for yet another fight against this dangerous bill? Even $5 makes a huge difference for our small, queer women-led org. We’ve beaten KOSA before, and it’s more important than ever that we do it again. And this time we’re going in for the kill.
DONATE NOW
Beyond funds, we need your voice in this fight. If you haven’t already, call and write your lawmakers to Stop KOSA2 and join our urgent actions Signal chat to stay updated on ways to help.8
Thanks for all you do,

Greetings fellow proponents of a free and uncensored internet. We've been fighting a hard and stressful fight this year trying to ensure that the internet as we know it remains as it is. It's tiring and stressful and we all keep doing it because we want to keep from losing the internet that's given us freedom and the ability to do what we love. We've been sending our emails, calling our representatives, and signing our petitions to all do our parts and I'm very proud of every one of you for doing such.
And now, I come to you all with yet one more thing that you can do. Possibly even easier than constantly calling and emailing people. Something that's really quite simple for any adult to do.
Cut the hydra's head and burn the stump for good. This year, we actually have the opportunity to vote some of the biggest sponsors of the bills that pose the greatest danger to our internet out of office. Which could prevent any further attempts to keep popping up their bills over and over again. Including one of the two main backers of KOSA.
Below are a couple of Senators who are up for re-election this very November, and who you have a chance of giving the boot for a chance to salt the earth of at least a couple of these dangerous bills. Or at least make it harder for them to make a comeback.
Senator Marsha Blackburn (Republican - Tennessee) - One of the two major sponsors of the dreaded KOSA.
Senator Ted Cruz (Republican - Texas) - One of the major sponsors of the newer Kids Off Social Media Act that was introduced earlier this month.
Senator Christopher Murphy (Democrat - Connecticut) - One of the main sponsors of the Protecting Kids On Social Media Act.
While getting these three out of office would not fully solve the problem, getting them voted out could give us a fighting chance! So if you or any of your friends, enemies, frenemies, occasional acquaintances, or distant cousins thrice removed live in those states and want to give us a chance to get some of the hottest irons out of the proverbial fire, then keep your eyes on those elections, ensure your voter registration is all up to date, and use what little power we as voting adults have in this crapstorm of a nominally democratic system to get them out of there so we can have a chance to breathe a little easier!
While obviously there may be other considerations for some people when voting certain people out of office, and you may choose for certain people over others due to some issues outweighing others, these are my suggestions to you if you would like to focus on this issue in particular. Do what is best for you, but if the free and private internet is important to you, then I ask you to place some genuine consideration on this.
Thank you for reading. Best of luck to all of you!

KOSA is back, and we need to stop it.
KOSA is a censorship bill that won’t make kids safe. Instead, it'll put all internet users at risk, especially youth. If you believe in a free and open internet, tell your lawmakers to reject #KOSA! https://stopkosa.com/
Please sign and call your lawmakers if you live in the US! This affects us all in fandom spaces. They say it's to protect children, but this bill will censor the internet with whatever Trump and his goons want.

Pillowfort is in need of support! Let's do what we do best >:3
I haven't used Pillowfort in a LONG time, and I never really was a regular user per se, but they're seeking funds right now to help keep them alive! Even if I don't use these sites often, it should absolutely still be acknowledged how important it is to have sites like this that aren't controlled by massive corporations. So if you're a Pillowfort user or just want to help support a free Internet, please consider tossing them a dollar or two!

As we move off of major social media apps I want to remind folks of the days when people had personal websites! I personally love neocities which is a free (unless you want big huge files then it’s still cheap) HTML webplatform where you can build your own website. It’s not the most user friendly so I think I might start making tutorials on my neocities (which needs a major revamp) if people are interested (looking at u @spinnychaircirclecasting) and then prob posting about that on here also

The markup for KOSA is tomorrow. This is a very vital moment. Here are some action steps to do:

FlipaClip premiumed it’s shit now it’s a fucking supcription service, I got the one time payment before the switch but my friends didn’t so it just grinds my fucking gears
Something is genuinely want to do if I had any knowledge on organization or app design is to put together a team of programmers/app-maker-people and make like an entirely free free animation/art program that has all the stuff but with tutorials and a simplified layout
Idk how realistic it could be but we could get money from kofi/patreon stuff maybe and like I’d want to optimize it as much as possible too and be accessible on as many different softwares like I’d want this shit to run on a CALCULATOR/j
Again it’s just a bit of a silly idea that may not be achievable at all I don’t know anything about programming but a guy can dream
Though any programmers/app designers here I’d really like to hear your thoughts/critiques please as long as they remain in good faith and respectful!

How are we all feeling about the TikTok ban?
On one hand, as an Open Internet advocate, I'm against banning any type of media. If it's bad and damaging, expose it for what it is, offer a healthier alternative, but let it be. Can't ban them all, one goes down, another rises up. This game of Whack-A-Mole is a waste of time and resources. The Internet was at its best when the overreach was the lowest.
On the other hand, TikTok is indeed the shadiest social media platform out there. Its developers literally got a memo to shape the algorithm so that it pushes content with people who appear anything short of rich and beautiful to the bottom. It promotes ragebait, leaving people in a worse mental state than before using it. It promotes extremism. It's uber glitchy, and not for the user's benefit. Everybody who starts creating there inevitably succumbs to clout chasing. I created my first ever TikTok account a couple months ago, because hubby found a promotion that we'd both get some money in TikTok Shop if I use his referral link to create a new account. I created it - no money, the app kept throwing an error. So we got nothing out of it, but TikTok got an account out of me. I haven't watched a single video on that account - if I need to see a video on TikTok, I do it on the browser, logged out.
So I didn't like TikTok… and I didn't use it. I voted with my presence on that platform, just like we all do by being here on Tumblr.
From my observation, TikTok these days is just a tryhard central tbh. If people want to join in and be yet another tryhard, let them have their fun. If they lose their brainrot reel on TikTok, they'll look for their fix of brainrot on other platforms, so you won't get a less brainwashed nation by banning it.
Oh and the "data stored in China" argument, like Mutahar of SomeOrdinaryGaming pointed out, is uber hypocritical - ByteDance does not treat our data any worse than Meta (Facebook) or Alphabet (Google), the only difference is that it's stored on the American soil. So it's pretty much an "it's okay only when we do it" argument.
I say keep the TikTok online and let us vote with our presence on the social media platform of our choice.
